Starting Point Chapter 15:
Local Area Network is well connected. It is created to share related Resources. Some examples of "Nodes" are : computer, router, printer, sensing device, video camera, and controller. This can connect to External Networks. It has a central server that everyone is communicating with. It is local. You log onto a security base. 2 major catagories pere to pere, (# of computers lives on each of computers). They have been around awhile. Another is Client server network. With Peer-to-peer each user has to have a valid user ID and password. It is approved by the client operating system. The local user acount exists only on a single computer. One user may have many accounts on differnt server. Security principle is somthing that gains control. Without user accounts there are no problems. Accessing Shares- My network places, map network drive, internet explorer, run menue. Client/ Server Model- Server mangages security for LAN. for example User accounts, printers, and file sharing. There is Single network user ID and password. Authenticate against the NOS too. It's the domain model and the Adminstrator assigns permissions. The server stores info in the database as well. One chooses the user name, password and the network you wish to work on. The authentication is done on the server. domain means everyone is logging onto teh same server. In order for a client to participate they have to have a network client. The machine needs a domain. One has to tell it which network to join. One has to install a protocall in a network card. The point of the protocall is to connect to novel servers. Net booy is unroutable. Can't get on internet. TCPIP is what most people use. UTP and STP has Ethernet nework. UTP-Unsheieded twsited pair. STP-Shielded twisted pair.

When running windows, alot of prperties are already running. If we don't see columns your looking for, look at the different processes. The performance tab shows page file usage and CPU usage. If the machine is running slow it means we're experienceing some type of overload. If the machine has users that are able to be logged on at the same time thn one uses the ussers tab. It is informative because we can know what they're doing. Services is a control pannel outlet. It allows necessary services and running unneeded services. It consumes resources and adds overhead. It adds a security risk. In windows there is a group called "start-up". It happens when you reboot your computer. Norton Anto-Virus sometimes runs automatically. If one wants info on their Microsoft

Mrs Happy started the day talking about USB cards and Wifi cards. She showed us how to take out the hardware safely.Notebook Processors have AMD, Intel, and Motorola. These all are famous with tth e Notebook comptuer. The keyboards are much smallre but have the same features including the Fn key. When you hold that down you'll see alot of other function keys. The num lock key can also lock the function keys. If you hit this for example.. your letter L could be 6. Monitors have LCD technology. You can lose less power, heat, space, and glare. Notebook Pointing Devices have left button, glide surface, and a right button. Communication Connections- LAN technology, Wireless Protocols, and Linking devices all tie into this. Infrared light is being used, and speed is 9600. 10-20 ft is the range. Radio uses ones radio signal. 802.11 is traveling at 54 megabits. Bluetooth is a shortrange radio, up to 10 meters. Notebooks have a Microphonee port and a HEadphone port. 2 more review slides were showed next and she showed how to put in your PC cards. If one has a prominant card then you have to get into the laptop. Remove the power and battery. Remove the "bay", it looks like batteries. Take off the wires and then take out the two clips. This is a wireless card. Then put in your battery and plug in the power. Ones Ethernet cable can perminantely be plugged in. The Docking Station has ports, Slots for desktop cards, and Bays for drives. Maintenance: Clean the exterior case, clean the touchpad, keep the fan openings and ventialtion holes clear, Blot out dust and other materials from sensitive components. Clean the monitor. Remoove dust, crumbs, and dirt from between the keyboard keys. Also Clean the CD or DVD-ROM drive. If one takes the laptop out of the office, make sure to get a laptop case. It has a special padding in it. PDA has Calendars, Contacts, MINI applications, Games and Vertical Market Software. One can find "health and Fitness" to Bianary Calulators. When one uses this, you have to use Grafitti. The Stylus is a small pen that acts as a touch screen. Inputs: Menues, the handwriting techniquie and a keyboard. One can tap the icons. This is stored in the body of the PDA. There's always a battery indicator on the screen. Connecting the PDA one has connection options. Cradle with USB or serial connection. Like USB, Inrared, Bluetooth, and WiFi. Synchronizing info, Palm Desktop or WIndows CE or Pocket Pc. ACT is a sales deal. Temporary Files: keeps track of current statuses on an activity. It begins with the "eyebrow key" or ends with. .tmp. We're going to look for certain files. Delete files that are not in use. One sometimes doesn't know where the file is and then you can search for it. When you want to undelete by using "Undelete". Recycling bin belongs to Windows. Window Diagnostics falls into many different categories. In order to access system info go to system tools from the start menu. It takes a minute to refresh info. The plus and minus signs allow you to hide/see information. Some favorite parts is getting information from other users. One can look for various files and folders.

Some network connections are Ethernet, and Wireless, etc. With laptops, one can change a lot of things. Like USB, and Firewire. Hot Swap is where one could take out their dvd dslot and put in thier floppy disk drive. The laptop then recognized it. Non-Hot-Swappable, requires the laptop to be turned off, and power drained, battery removed. And Internal (memory, and hard disk). If one wishes to upgrade the memory, they need to make sure they becareful whats under the "hood". Make sure you buy the memory ship that is the correct one. One can have the same issues with notebook computers, are the same you can have with a larger desktop computer. People have put protective covers, under your keyboard to keep the internal components safe. One of the biggest dangers of keyboards is crumbs. If one damages the touch screen, it can be hard to fix. Notebook batteries, provide 30 min to 8hrs of powers. The power Utility will recognize C power. They can be recharged when you plug them into AC Power as well. It takes about an hour to fully recharge a laptop. The Notebook has a computer plu, outlet plyg and Transformer. Power Indicator lights appear on a laptop. Solid green is "up and running". The nice thing about laptops is that they can run on Battery power. They're good for on the go. In "Power Options" menu, there is "Power Schemes, Alarms, Power Metter, and Advanced, and Hibernate". If you think you're having power problems, check the power lights. That's the first thing to do.

Printers! Yay!...) Printers can connect and be a USB.
First type: Dot-Matrix Printter. Impact printer where the inked ribbon striked the paper. It is great for multipart forms. It has tractor feed, and friction feed. It has serial or parallel connections.Printer Drivers are important. One has to have the correct one. Print uality can depend on if you have the right driver. A safety issue is making sure you have your hair pulled back! Or.. OUCH!:)
And Ink Jet Printer, are very inexpensive, and very nice. They are different though when they are compared. Ink Dispersion is where it forces ink through nozzles onto the paper. (like it's painted). It heats up the ink and then creates a bubble whch then explodes and sends ink to the paper. The cartridges can come in black and color. the rpinter can have 300- to 600 nozzles. It is cheaper to get colors for the printer then just one color cartridge. In terms of quality, your resolution is dpi(dot. per. inch) If one has a thin absorbant paper then you will lose ink. It will lower your graphics. In order to hook up a printer one has to be in the local administrator.
Straight path, and curved path were talked abuot next. On the curved, the paper is fed through the bottom. Printers are becommng less expensive everyday. Ink cartridges are used up fast. Toner, however, lasts longer. It uses Ep. It staticlly charges it with a laser light. Laster Printer components are Laster scanning assembly, Power supplis, Paper control and transport assembly. and Electroic control Package. The power supplies are very High Voltage. These printers are more complex but have, high volume and faster.

Hand Held scanners are usually for bar code readers. Like for UPS. To track inventories, and grocery stores etc. It uploads all the information. Digital Cameras have connections like usb, FIrewire, Hp Printers, Memory Card Readers, and Docking. This works well with plug and play. Digital Camera Connections-USB is with still cameras. Firewire is with video. Batteries-Rechargeable, disposable, and if so then digital rated. Card Readers, Built in, and external device. Some problems are like lower battery. If not uploading correctly it might not be detecting the cable. The camera mode is where you can put it in and it will be in mode.

Right click and then up to display and to control pannel. She showed one how to change properties and display deals. If one installs their video card they would have more colors to choose from. Sometimes you won't see all the tabs. One can ruin their hardware. Display properties have tabs of Themes, desktop, screensaver, appearance, and settings. Each of these tabs does someting unique. There are a lot of different things one is able to change in this are of the computer. One can change the color settings and make sure they have it set up the way they want it. Video connectors have different pins and then they have things that transmit something. Make sure there is no bent pins. if you try to bend it back you do not want to try to bend it back because u might just break it. Red, green, and blue, send things out. Each of the pins have a purpose and so if one is bent the purpose is ruined as well. Their are alot of display adjustments. LIke brightness and color etc. There are many different things that get you to switch setings. It's like trial and error. Every monitor is different. CRT issues: screen could be black. Image might flicker or distorts. Noisy monitor, or image scrolling. If it's flickering it might be a bent pin. The flat pannel (LCD) is becomming less expensive. there is a lot of lesss glare. The flat pannel is producing a nice clear image. characteristcs are like the screen size, viewing angle, response rate, contrast rate, native resolution, brighness, and alot of other features. A lot of the flatpannels have built in speakers, and will come with an installation disk. There are 24 pins of the DVI. TMDS- Transmits data to a digital monitor. Touch Screens have a touch-sensitive surface. Some of the uses are : PDA, POS, ATM, GPS. Another form of displays are projectors. It duplicates images on your wall. Speakers are related but alot of the monitors have speakers themselves. Speakers can be connected together. Scanners can scan pictures, documents etc. Most use a TWAIN scanner. A flatbed scanner is where it scans the the image and will save it to your computer. It's similar to a office copier.

On Cd Roms you can volume up or down. Some CD roms have 1 button. A manuel eject hole is a tiny hole that is about the size of a paper clip. All you have to do is take a thin object(paperclip) and insert it to eject the disk. Another reason to use it is its just an easier way then to plug everyting back in and then eject it. When you want to put data on a cd rom, you use what people call "burning". The 1x helps the cd spin. 12x is 12 times faster. If there external you use firewire and usb connections. When it comes to drive cleaning, you dont' want a bad cloth. You want a soft, lint free cloth, no harsh chemicals, soft soap, or water. Becareful of the surrounding. Another form of storage is a falsh drive, aka jump drive. Another form is an MP3 Player. It happens to store your music. just like your ipod. Another is a floppy disk. 3 1/2 space is 80 tracks. A high density floppy holds 2.88. Floppy drives usually have their own cable. Not many people use it. Not enough stored data. Alot of people use a boot disk. Some requires a cd rom. Windows 98 allows boot up. If one needs a boot floppy go to bootdisk.com. Backing up your data is very important. Some tape formats are QIC, DDS, DLT, LTO, AIT. Adaptors send signals to your monitor. It's built into the motherboard. Video requires enormous resources. Data is transferred in short intervals. Some data, Grapical OS, 3D Game graphics. PCIe PCI express. It uses Serial Communication. You run the setup with the device! They can be tricky and when you reboot, it might not go as well. She went onto to firewall next. Transfers data at 800 MBPS. The Firewall 400 goes up to 400 MBPS. She uses it for external back up devices. Firewall uses 30 volts of power. For installing the devices is simply pluggin it in and..BOOM. You're done. INfered and Bluetooth do not require wires. They can transfer things from 10 to 20 ft. Bluetooth goes up to 10 Meters. To install it you usually have a password and it pairs to something. RCA connector is seen on a back of a tv or vcr. yellow is video, red is for right speaker, white is left speaker. If you know the colors and what they stand for, you'll be better off. MIDI connectors are old. Anything you take out of a computer is an import device, ex mouse. As soon as you plug the device in , it should be ready to go. then moved onto chap. 10. If vdeo isn't working then there are things one can check. If it doesn't work it may not be plugged in or the cable is bad. if it flickers, refresh it. If it is blurry it may mean your monitor isn't working. It can be the same with Sound Cards. No external sound could be because the speakers are not plugged in. If the sound is distorted it could be because the volume is too high. Make sure you have a microphone if you wat to capture sound. Hardware Resource Interupts: gets the CPU attention. It pauses current activity that is going on. IRQ is an interupt request. They're 16 IRQs. To assign an IRQ one can plug and play or us DIP switches or Jumper Blocks. Or you can use a software Interface. We can go to resources and then choose. Then you can't overlap the IRQ's.DMA = Direct Memory Address. It allows hardware to access memory. It is being "fased" out. Comm Ports take place in a Serial Transmission. Motom cable is where you cross the cables. Pin 1 to something else. A straight through cable is where its Cable 1 to cable 1. Cable 2 to cable 2. Each Pin number has its own connection. The pins can't be broken, otherwise they won't work. Parallel Ports send more then 1 bit at a time on a parallel channel. This is very common with printers. They have expansion cards that you can buy. The parallel ports require resources. Then she talked abot Printer cables. Pc Input Devices were next. Examples: Keyboard, Mouse, Trackball, Trackpad, Pens (styli), and Touch Screens. Most of the time the Keyboard and Mouse cable are color coded (purple for keyboard) (green, for mouse).
Somtimes the cable can fit in another keyboard part, but it will not function correctly. Another Input Device is a Barcode reader. She rambled on and on about Her different USB types that she personally uses. USB is popular because of the speed it uses.

Starting Point: Disk 3
Started #3 DVD!! yay.....*caugh. Just kidding. We started talking more about buses, aka Pci's. When you put in a card, you have to unplug the computer and drain the power so you don't hurt yourself. We have to handle the cards by the edges/sides we don't want to touch the parts that go into the PC. IRQ has a numeric address it helps the CPU identify the interrupting source. All devices need their own memory. DMA channels stand for Direct Memory Access. Then she talked about the Device Mangager. We are able to see all the different devices and what type of IRQ it uses.

Drivers: some are provided for you, and others you might have to install. Then she went on to the Pc's. You first have to go to the start menue. Then to control panel, then to sound and audio. Sund Card Connecters are your microphone/speaker etc! Also handle them on the edges and don't bend any of the delecate things on he piece of hardware. She talked alot abou different commands as well. There are 7 different types of speed standards. She took a laptop and showed us what a mini PCI looks like. The screws are very small compared to normal ones. OMG!! Mrs.Happy eats computer ribbons!! She says they come in different shapes, sizes, and flavors!! hahaha!!! This was a very interesting day with Mrs. Happy! :)

Today she talked about IRQs. There are common ones. You can identify a section of the shared memory. and the devices use it to transfer data to the main memory.
She then talked about DMA-Direct memory access. She covered a Base memory Bios. I got to see what DIP switches and Jumpers look like too. They do not just flip on and off like a light switch. Then we talked about the ISA expansion Bus Slot. It looks exactly as it sounds. this is either a 32 bit o64 bit bus. One can have up to 5 slots per system.
Then she said that there is a new standard called PCIe. this is newer and uses serial communication. This was a very interesting lesson.
Stopping Point- end of disk 2.

Take Power sources out of lap tap, then drain power before upgrading memory. Make sure you put it in a bag. then slide in the new memory by only touching the corners. There are little clasps that click it into place. There are many ways to test memory. POST is one. This will detect new memory. Memtest86 is one type of test. You can also get one from Microsoft(website). This was very interesting to look at. If we want to upgrade a compuer with memory: we can see if there is something special on the memory we need. Some websites will do this for us. Mrs. Happy showed us a website called crucial.com This let one know how much memory they needed. She also showed a table of different Memory Types. Ex: RAM, CMOS, ROM, PROM, EPROM, EEPROM, and FLASH. ECC corrects problems.
Then we looked at Task Manager. Then we could check what we wanted to see. This is a useful utility, that people don't realize. Memory Symptoms: you can have an error message. The computer can also randomly crash.
Then she got into Buses inside the CPU. There are 4 types.
1. Address Bus.
2. Data Bus
3. Expansion Bus
4. Video Bus

Okay, so today we talked about BIOS and the Mother Board. We can change the date and time in the BIOS. When you flash the BIOS you have to make sure that it is in complete order. Never reboot the computer when you update the BIOS.The first thing that she talks about today is how to update your BIOS. One of the biggest problems with BIOS is the fact that it sometimes makes the the hard drive inaccessible. Another issue would be having the wrong date and time on the computer. One should remeber to only update the BIOS when it absolutely needs to updated. The motherboard is actually run with a battery. When this battery is removed or it runs out of power, it resets the computer back to default. Computer performance is rated in million of intructions per seconds or MIPS. There are also many different cooling methods for computers. The most common cooling system is called fins. Another method would be a fan that would go inside the computer itself. Fans can also be on the outside of the computer itself. One of the most important things to remeber with a computer is to have to tower positioned so that it will get enough circulation for the fans. This way the computer won't meltdown and stay cool. To upgrade the BIOS, it is wise to go to the manufactureres website and update it from there. The next subject discussed was memory. Memory on computers is known as RAM or random access memory. Quality RAM is critial to computers. When replacing memory it is important to rember how to install it. The new memory has to be put in at a 45 degree angle. MY STUFF ERASED WE TALKED ABOUT THE SAME STUFF I APPOLOGIZE!!!!!

Starting Point: 1.7 Static
Static is caused by different things. We are always supposed to unplug the cords. Then drain the power. The power supplies were interesting. She showed the power supply box. It has alot of different wires in it. Then she talked about Installing a Power Supply. We have to turn off the pc, disconnect power etc. Then we looked at different connectors. She spliced a wire and showed us the different colors of wires. She connected the wire to the mother board. Protecting your equipment is vitally important. To start with we looked at battery backups. She used a UPS. We look at how much battery power it had or needs. Different things will happen and then you can troubleshoot. Electricity is deffinitely important. Learning how to protect your equipment is something you should always do! You can tell these steps are important and will help you in the long run.

Ms. Happy talked first about Windows Explorer. It's a very powerful utility! The root folder had hidden folders and she showed us how to enter and see the files. She also talked about copying folders. We are able to copy somehing like a folder and copy it as many times as we like. The recycling bin is a holding place for all things we deleted. You can empty it and make sure what you deleted was what you wanted. She just told us about different file extensions such as .bat, or .bin etc. A batch file is a series of commands at one time. she told us about a lot of them. File limits are like you have 8.3 Eight characters for the name and 3 characters for the extension. Seperated by a period. Windows has a 255 character limit. With the Attrib command she showed different key terms and what they do. On Note Pad she showed us different abilties on it. How to save documents you made on the application. Then she went into a whole review of the chaper. Like to troubleshoot, security, firwalls, software management, hardware support, and then moved into assistance utilities. Also talked about network users. We talked about Windows XP. Then to Files and Atributes. Thne it was File permisions.
With Electricity we do not touch anything is uncovered. Don't stick things into electical sockets! HA. duh.

Starting Point: 1.22 Demo: Windows XP Professional and Computer Management.
Mrs. Happy Showed us how to see if we had someone in shared folders to see if they are working on something. We toured different tools in Computer Management.
The we talked about the Command Promp. We first go to the Run menu, becuase there is 2 different ways to open a command promp. First you can type in Command or cmd. DIR tells what is in the instructors folder. Also, I learned what different codes do in the Command. We can control many different things. for example: C:\>dir/ah is where you see hidden files. She also showed us how to scroll up and pause it so we can read it. Overall= Great day!

Ms. "Happy" talked about network wizard. How to set up a shortcut to get to it too. She showed all the different options as well. How to set up and run the different options. She talked about file and server security. A roaming profile is where someone is constantly on the same computer. Others may use different computers. Then we looked at the security policy. It is in the control pannel and then into tools. Then we went to the local secrity policy. Acount policy was the first thing we really looked at. She showed me what to do with the passwords and the different options we can change. For example: when to change your password, how many days before you have to change your password, who is able to get on the computer etc.

Starting Point: Mac OS X.
We first explored macs and what some of the programs are. A downfall to having a mac is because you might get a newer version of a program. But it might take some time to get downloaded onto all the macs out there. She also mentioned a Linux which is a Windows based graphic user. One is able to download it for free and it will run on most Pc's. She also went over some terms and explained them along with talking about security on your computer. She told me that we need to get a virus protection on your computer. Also how to let some programs have a pass to the security. She also talked about trouble shooting the computer. It helps to fix a malfunction with your computer.
